yes, Jesus loves me

my nephew is my namesake — Chimdindu — which translates to my god is alive.”

fitting, really. his favorite song is “Jesus loves me” — the first thing he wants to hear every morning, and what he expects to come on every time we turn on the tv.

his dad, and more recently i, sing it to him to get him to sleep or calm down whenever he’s crying. and it works relatively well, compared to other methods.

lately, i’ve had to add playful twists to keep it fresh for him — like blowing a kiss instead of saying “loves” in “yes, Jesus loves me.” he gets a kick out of it.

he’s been ill recently. and like most kids, he’s gotten more clingy — demanding more attention than usual and crying a lot. sleep is harder too. but the song still works its magic.

there’s a line in the song that says, “little ones to him belong; they are weak, but he is strong.” in moments like this — when his strength fades, he struggles to sleep, and cries a lot, yet still finds comfort in the song — he reminds me that Jesus is strong in our weakness.

and isn’t that a beautiful thing?

get well soon, boy
